Unmoderated User Test
A user test where participants interact with a product or service at their own pace, without direct supervision.
Unmoderated remote user test: A UX research method where participants interact with a product, website, or feature at their own pace, without direct supervision. Used during the discovery phase, this test helps gather spontaneous qualitative feedback on understanding, navigation, or user expectations under near-real conditions.
As part of a CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) approach, user testing is highly complementary to A/B testing:
- It is particularly well suited to exploratory or behavioral hypotheses (e.g., understanding why a page doesn't convert, detecting blockers not visible in the data).
- A/B testing, on the other hand, is more relevant for validating specific, high-stakes hypotheses based on quantitative data (e.g., “This version will increase the conversion rate by +X%”).
By combining these two approaches, you maximize the chances of identifying solid optimization levers:
→ User testing fuels ideas and helps detect weak signals.
→ A/B testing validates their actual impact in a measurable and statistically reliable way.
This complementarity creates a virtuous iteration process, where intuition drawn from observation is objectively tested to guide product and marketing decisions.
