Conversion funnel
The conversion funnel is a series of specific steps in the customer journey that users go through on a website or app, from their arrival to the final conversion, such as a purchase, a sign-up, or any other desired action.
Represents the succession of specific steps that a user goes through on a website or app between their first visit and a final conversion action, such as a purchase, a sign-up, or a contact request. It formalizes the process of turning visitors into customers, by modeling the behavioral and decision-making journey in a digital environment.
Typical funnel steps:
- Arrival on the site: via SEO, advertising campaigns, social media, or direct traffic.
- Discovery of offers: exploration of product pages, services, informational content.
- Selection: adding to cart, clicking to a form, making contact...
- Transactional engagement: start of the purchase process or form completion (checkout, sign-up, booking...).
- Final conversion: actual completion of the expected action.
CRO challenges:
Optimizing the conversion funnel is a major performance lever. It aims to:
- identify friction points (e.g.: cart abandonment, steps that are too long, usability issues),
- formulate improvement hypotheses based on behavioral analysis and user feedback,
- test concrete solutions through A/B tests, user tests, or interactive prototypes,
- measure and iterate to build a smoother, more reassuring funnel that is better aligned with expectations.
Analysis tools and methods:
- Quantitative: GA4 (custom funnels, drop-off rate by step), Mixpanel, BigQuery, scroll/click heatmaps, form completion rate.
- Qualitative: user testing, session replays (Hotjar, Clarity), verbatims, VoC, post-conversion NPS.
- Segmentation: funnel analysis by user profile (new vs returning, mobile vs desktop, acquisition channels...).
Benefits of an optimized funnel:
- Improved overall conversion rates,
- Reduced customer acquisition cost (CAC),
- Increased user satisfaction and trust,
- Better profitability of marketing actions,
- Smoother, more consistent customer experience at every step.
