On-site search optimization
Process of improving a website's internal search functionality.
Process aimed at improving a website's internal search features to deliver more relevant, faster, and easier-to-browse results. A well-designed on-site search allows users to quickly find what they're looking for, which improves the user experience, reduces frustration, and can lead to a significant increase in conversion rates — especially in high-content-volume environments, such as e-commerce sites, marketplaces, or complex product catalogs.
Main objectives:
- Relevance of results (keywords, synonyms, typos...),
- Display speed of results,
- Clear user interface (autocomplete, filters, sorting, keyword highlighting),
- Prioritization and personalization of results,
- Taking search intent into account (browsing vs buying vs researching).
Data sources for optimization:
- Google Analytics 4 (GA4):
- Analysis of the most frequent search queries, searches with no results, and conversion rates associated with search (via custom events).
- Building segments: users who performed a search vs those who didn't.
- Google Search Console:
- Identification of terms searched on Google that bring users to the site's internal search engine pages.
- Used to better align SEO and internal search content.
- Heatmap or session recording tools (e.g.: Hotjar, Clarity):
- Observation of behaviors on the search field, on results pages, or when faced with a lack of relevant results.
- Search back-end data (if accessible):
- Keyword frequency, click-through rate on results, exit rate after a search, zero-result searches, etc.
Impact on CRO:
- Increase in the conversion rate of visitors performing a search (often much higher than the overall average),
- Improved product or content discovery,
- Reduction in the bounce rate on search results pages,
- Better personalization of the user experience, particularly in e-commerce.
Ideas for concrete optimizations:
- Add smart autocomplete with relevant suggestions,
- Enable automatic correction of typos or synonyms,
- Offer dynamic filters and contextual sorting,
- Track clicks on results to prioritize the best-performing ones,
- Redirect searches with no results to alternative pages or recommendations.
