Multipage A/B test

Optimization technique that involves testing changes across several pages of a website simultaneously.

Experimentation technique in conversion rate optimization (CRO) that involves simultaneously testing variations across several interconnected pages within the same user journey. Unlike a classic A/B test, which evaluates a change on a single isolated page, the multipage test makes it possible to measure the overall impact of a set of changes spread across several key steps, often within a conversion funnel or a complex interaction scenario.

🎯 Objective:

Assess how a series of coordinated changes across several pages influences the overall user experience, as well as final performance indicators (conversion, retention, engagement...).

📌 Common use cases:

  • Redesign of a purchase funnel: product page + cart + checkout,
  • Improvement of an onboarding flow: series of account creation pages/forms,
  • Experimentation on a lead conversion flow: homepage + form + confirmation page,
  • Harmonization of a new branding across a set of key pages (header, visuals, editorial tone…).

✅ Advantages:

  • Enables a holistic approach to optimization (consistency between pages),
  • Avoids "disconnect" effects between an optimized page and a non-aligned page,
  • Better reflects the real impact of certain changes on the entire journey,
  • Useful for testing strategic concepts or gradual redesigns before a full rollout.

⚠️ Constraints:

  • More complex implementation than a simple A/B test (multi-page coordination, consistent versioning),
  • More demanding analysis, especially when it comes to isolating the effect of one element if several change at the same time,
  • Higher traffic requirement: because the test often involves subsets (e.g., users reaching all the pages in the journey),
  • Less suitable if the tested pages have very different objectives.

🧪 CRO best practices:

  • Maintain UX/UI consistency across the different pages of the same journey to avoid skewing results,
  • Define an overall primary KPI (macro-conversion) and secondary KPIs per page,
  • Combine multi-page tests with behavioral analysis (heatmaps, session recordings) to better understand intermediate interactions,
  • Use experimentation tools capable of handling multi-page logic: AB Tasty, Optimizely, Dynamic Yield, Kameleoon…
