Average order value significance calculator
Import your transactions and check whether the difference in average order value between two variants is reliable, despite large orders skewing the average.
Calculation method
Average Basket Calculator (beta)
Non-parametric approach. Mann-Whitney U test on ranks, with tie handling via average rank, continuity correction, and normal approximation of the U statistic. Confidence interval on the difference of means via bootstrap (2,000 resamplings with replacement), and bootstrap p-value on the sign of the difference.
Deliberate choice: no normality assumption, as basket distributions are strongly skewed and long-tailed, which undermines a classic t-test.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about the average order value test
- Order amounts have a skewed distribution: a few large orders pull the average upward. A classic t-test assumes a normal distribution and can lead to incorrect conclusions. The calculator estimates the p-value and confidence interval using bootstrap, with no assumption about the shape of the distribution, and confirms with the Mann-Whitney test.
