Variation iteration
A process involving adapting, adjusting or refining a variation tested in an initial A/B test, based on the results obtained, observed behaviors or new hypotheses. The goal is to deepen learning, improve performance and validate the robustness of an optimization avenue, as part of a continuous improvement approach.
A process involving adapting, adjusting or refining a tested variation in an initial A/B test, based on the results obtained, observed behaviors or new hypotheses. The goal is to deepen learning, improve performance and validate the robustness of an optimization avenue, as part of a continuous improvement approach.
🎯 Objective:
Not settling for the result of a single test, but:
- Optimizing a promising variation (but not yet a winner),
- Exploring another approach based on the same initial insight,
- Reinforcing a positive signal by testing bolder or more targeted versions,
- Adapting a variation to a new context or user segment.
📌 Examples:
- Testing a new CTA slightly improves the click-through rate → we iterate with different benefit-oriented wording.
- A new layout reduces the bounce rate but not the conversion rate → we iterate by testing a better hierarchy of elements.
- A variation performs well on desktop but not on mobile → we create a mobile-first specific iteration.
🔁 Role in a CRO strategy:
Iterations help to:
- Turn a “neutral test” into a learning lever (e.g., by analyzing micro-conversions),
- Build a progressive experimentation roadmap, through small successive adjustments,
- Reduce the risks associated with radical changes,
- Capitalize on past tests to refine insights and maximize impact.
🧪 Best practices:
- Always start from a concrete learning from the previous test (quantitative or qualitative),
- Change only one key variable at a time if possible, to isolate the effects,
- Document each iteration in a CRO knowledge base (hypothesis, variation, results),
- Use iterative tests to explore high-potential leads further, especially after “non-significant” but promising results.
